TRN Clinical Tax Education Workshop

July 3, 2020

Free

In January 2020, the North West Tax Clinic opened its doors for the North West community as a pilot project. The project is a collaboration between Lancaster University, University of Central Lancashire and national charity, TaxAid. The model for the clinic draws on student volunteers, tax practitioners and TaxAid to provide low-income individuals with accurate, professional tax advice. The clinic provides a platform for student experiential learning and the students undertake training to become TaxAid volunteers. They are the first line of support for the Clinic and answer the helpline, hold appointments with clients, identify their tax issues, and research and draft tax advice.

Following the pilot, this workshop, supported by the TRN, will aim to share some initial learning on the challenges and benefits to introducing a clinical tax education element to Law, Finance, or Accounting students. During the workshop, we will aim to:

  • Provide an insight into student experience by drawing on student survey data and the student volunteers;
  • Provide an insight into the supervisor experience and walk delegates through the challenges faced when setting up the North West Tax Clinic. For instance, marketing and infrastructure;
  • Give a tour of the North West Tax Clinic and answer delegate questions relating to setting up a Tax Clinic in their institution.

The workshop is intended to be a friendly environment to ask questions about Tax Clinics, as well as to share ideas on clinic models moving forwards.
