DESCRIPTION:The Center for Taxpayer Rights is convening the 5th International Conference on Taxpayer Rights on 30 September and 1 October 2020 in Pretoria\, South Africa\, hosted by the African Tax Institute at the University of Pretoria\, with technical assistance from the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD).  This year’s conference theme is Taxpayer Rights\, Human Rights: Issues for Developing Countries.  This ground-breaking conference will include presentations by practitioners\, scholars\, members of the judiciary\, and government officials on: \n  \n·        Taxpayer rights as human rights; \n·        Taxation as a means to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa and other developing countries; \n·        Independent administrative appeals and the promotion of integrity and fairness in the tax system; \n·        The role of legal privilege in the protection of taxpayer rights; \n·        Strengthening the rule of law and the protection of taxpayer rights in international tax disputes; \n·        Digitalization of tax administration and the implications for protection of taxpayer and human rights; and \n·        Barriers to access to justice and their impact on achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

SUMMARY:TRN Clinical Tax Education Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In January 2020\, the North West Tax Clinic opened its doors for the North West community as a pilot project. The project is a collaboration between Lancaster University\, University of Central Lancashire and national charity\, TaxAid. The model for the clinic draws on student volunteers\, tax practitioners and TaxAid to provide low-income individuals with accurate\, professional tax advice. The clinic provides a platform for student experiential learning and the students undertake training to become TaxAid volunteers. They are the first line of support for the Clinic and answer the helpline\, hold appointments with clients\, identify their tax issues\, and research and draft tax advice. \nFollowing the pilot\, this workshop\, supported by the TRN\, will aim to share some initial learning on the challenges and benefits to introducing a clinical tax education element to Law\, Finance\, or Accounting students. During the workshop\, we will aim to: \n\nProvide an insight into student experience by drawing on student survey data and the student volunteers;\nProvide an insight into the supervisor experience and walk delegates through the challenges faced when setting up the North West Tax Clinic. For instance\, marketing and infrastructure;\nGive a tour of the North West Tax Clinic and answer delegate questions relating to setting up a Tax Clinic in their institution.\n\nThe workshop is intended to be a friendly environment to ask questions about Tax Clinics\, as well as to share ideas on clinic models moving forwards.
