About

Academic tax research and education can be an isolated activity; tax teachers and researchers are often spread very thinly across business schools, law faculties, social policy departments, economics departments and beyond. Activities and events that bring this dispersed group together for co-operative, constructive research and discussion about tax teaching are very valuable indeed. This is the reason for the Tax Research Network’s existence and ongoing mission.

Between 1992 and 2001, there was a series of tax research conferences and workshops. Out of these events, informal contacts were made which resulted in the formation of the Tax Research Network (TRN). Those early conferences and workshops were supported by the P.D. Leake Trust (a charity associated with the Centre for Business Performance of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) and Warwick Business School. Since 2002, continuing grant support has been periodically received from the ICAEW Charitable Trust, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, the Chartered Institute of Taxation, the IFA Congress Trust and others, who made it possible to run a range of activities and events in particular our annual conference.

The current, long standing, sponsors of the TRN annual conference are the ICAEW Charitable Trusts and the CIOT.

The TRN also now incorporates a tax education theme in its focus and across its range of activities.

The tax educators and researchers who have participated in these events are grateful to the sponsors for enabling them to meet and discuss their research in progress and ideas for future research.

In 2021 the unincorporated association that had been the basis of the TRN was transferred into a company limited by guarantee entity called the Tax Research Network Ltd (Company number 12843586).
